Whenever i'm in a foreign country i love to go to the supermarket and see the sort of foods the locals buy. Opposite my homestay's place theres a carrefour supermarket (i think it's originally a french chain, but i've seen stores in malaysia and spain too), but theres also a walmart in town centre as well as local chinese chains. if i had to compare it to something back in oz i'd have to say it's like pick n pay hypermarket, where u've got your foodgoods and non-food goods under one roof. they're nowhere as big as the ones i've seen in the uk though, like asda or tescos.
As you can imagine, there fresh produce section in china is alot more colourful than in other countries, with every animal body part imaginable on display, including heads with very dead wide open eyes. alot of the self serve sections for snacks, cooked meats and baked goods don't look very well maintained though, so i've steared clear of those. They seem to be into processed meats (they've even got cute little bite sized ones!), and of all things yoghurt (mmm more melamine).
My breakfast as actually evolved from hardboiled eggs to processed meat with bread each morning. Can't say i'm a big fan of the spam like ham, but i suppose i need a meat fix from somewhere. Some of the odd snacks include shredded meat and tofu in sauce, and chocolate(?!!) flavoured cheese. See the pic if you don't believe me.
Coffee seems to be considered as a luxury/classy good here in china. Theres not many cafes around, except for around the city centre (starbucks) and close to uni campuses. The problem is coffee is actually costing me more money to buy here than it does in australia. i calculated that even if the aus dollar was alot stronger i'd still be paying slightly more here! and some of the coffee i've had here has been pretty ordinary. This has frustrated me to no end since my body has still carried its coffee dependence over from last semesters exam period in aus. I've even taken the trouble to buy a thermal bottle and make my own coffee in the morning to take to class! maybe with its rapid growth in popularity amongs the younger generation coffee will be of better quality and affordability after a couple more years.
ewww chocolate-flavoured cheese! sounds like you are getting healthy nutritious meals there...soon you'll be skinny al..
